Sweet Baby James is one of Australia’s finest purveyors of blues guitar. You can put that in the bank. He’s got that rare gift of the groove and all the chops of a master technician. When he gets to work on Shopping Cart, Lady’s Almost West or the instrumental Hot Plate you immediately feel a low down dirty syncopated groove he seems to be able to pull effortlessly from his guitars with just a couple of bare fingertips. All the great spirits of hard drivin’ hill country blues have somehow found their way into James’ hands. They can make a dead man dance. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve seen James set up in a bar and by the end of the second tune the dance floor is pumping. Not many people can do that.
Why don’t you check out Shopping Cart right here while you peruse the rest of the review?

It’s not all James though. Rob Eyers’ drumming gets big props too. He seems to be able to construct subtle but complex patterns that fill the soundscape beautifully. But you gotta listen carefully. He’s not showy. There’s no ‘wall-of-toms’ here. Phil Collins can’t touch this guy.
Watching Rob play you get the feeling that God has blessed him with a couple extra hemispheres in his brain. All his limbs seem to operate fully independently of each other. A drum kit in Rob’s capable hands isn’t a simple keeper of rhythm but a fully fledged palate of booms, rumbles, shakes and cracks. I challenge anyone to resist tapping their foot to the groove set up in the intro to Devil & The Grave. Anyone who isn’t reduced to a writhing, primordial spasm after listening to Come Over Here has obviously sold their soul to the devil. Do you feel like a primordial spasm? Check it out here:

The fellas can also strip it back. Get low and blue. Refugee Child and Evil Tongue have a sparseness that let us in and help us get up into the music. It’s about the feel. A standout on the album is James’ soulful lament No Love. This tune is more about the silence between the notes than the notes themselves. You can hear he’s mining the same vein as Junior Kimbrough’s Lonesome Road or R. L. Burnside’s Just Like a Bird Without a Feather on this one. A beautifully executed meditation about someone lost in a world of negativity. Get amongst it here:

After a listen to the whole album you’ll know that these guys don’t subscribe to run-of-the-mill blues cliches. Don’t buy this album if you’re after epic rapid fire solos or more re-runs of the old standards. These guys are all about carving their own little notch in the bedpost of the blues. It’s more about ‘feel’ and ‘groove’ than ‘shock’ and ‘awe’.
13 original tunes made right here in little ol’ Adelaide. Be proud people.
